You’re on the right track if these 3 things happen to you

When I first start working with clients, a question I get asked a lot is, “How do I know if I’m on the right track?”

There are lots of external signposts that will validate whether or not you’re on the right track. For instance, having clients show up is one of them. Making more money. Getting lots of subscribers. Receiving praise from customers. Feeling awesome in your body. Being locked in into your intuition. Feeling expansive in your heart.

But there are also 3 signposts that are less common and they are cloaked, and that’s because these signposts wear different clothing and are disguised as Failure, Doubt or Fear. Depending on how you look at it, they can be 100% negative (seemingly) but if you look deeper, they are huge validations that you are on the right path.

Today, I’m gonna shed light on what these 3 signposts are. If you see them, not only are you on the right track, you are actually on the GRAND track.

You know, I wish the world and its people weren’t set up this way, but it’s human nature and it’s hard to avoid human nature.

Okay, here’s the first negative–positive signpost:

1. When you meet people who hope you’ll fail

This one is extremely unpleasant and it’s depressing, but it happens all the time.

A few years ago, I made a good reputation for myself in a male–dominated industry and I saw an opening and cornered that niche. One day, I was sitting in a posh office waiting to talk about this $7 million deal I was bringing to the table. As it turns out, the meeting wasn’t about the deal. The meeting was about telling me to get out of this business because, as I was told, I am going to fail.

In that chair, I felt like I was 5 years old. From up close, it seems like failure. But when I looked closer and after a lot of time had passed, I began to see it as validation that I’m on the right track.

After all, taking your purpose and light out into the world is going to make others feel threatened. And that’s not in our control at all.

Some time later, the same thing happened to me in a woman–dominated industry too — it happens everywhere! I belonged to a mastermind and one of the members told me, “It is certain you are going to fail.” How damning! She said a bunch of nasty things too, but I can’t remember what else she said anymore because it was that important.

One more example: I used to also belong to a spiritual book club, made up of older and more conservative folk. I guess I made the mistake of sharing my hopes and dreams with them. At one meeting while I was talking to them about my plans, for some reason my empathic skills blew wide open. I looked at one woman and I heard, “Who cares. Shut up.” Then I looked to the person next to her and I heard, “I hope you fail.”

I went home that night stunned — you know how sometimes you are stunned so much that you forget to blink? I wrote to everyone that night to say I decided to leave book club and wished everyone well.

So ladies, the bolder you are and the brighter you shine, this might happen to you. Or it might not. But if it does, just let it roll off your back. It’s not about you! Take this negative–positive signpost as validation that you’re moving on the right track. What people condemn about you is only true if you create that for yourself.

2. 93% of the world disagrees with you

One of my favorite books is The Spirituality of Success and the author, Vincent M. Roazzi, says that statistics show 93% of people will achieve poverty by the time they retire. The reason is because 93% of people have the wrong formula for success and they accept popular beliefs that are contradictory to wealth. The other 7% acquired a set of beliefs that allowed them to create success.

Roazzi says, “You’ll know you’re on the right track if at least 93 percent of people disagree with you!” I agree.

Along your way to greatness, you’ll find people who will totally dismiss what you’re doing or dreaming of. They’ll say, “That’s too unrealistic.” Or, “go get a job.” Or, “That’s never been done before.” Or, “That’s too risky.”

That might be true — for them. But for you? Take that as another signpost that you’re moving in the right direction. The greatest entrepreneurs in the world were all seen as crazy in the beginning, but who’s laughing now?

On the rare occasion, you’ll find people who hang out in the middle — those who don’t blindly accept your ideas nor blindly dismiss them. Those in the middle will say to you, “Go test your idea and refine it. Try different things till it works.” If you find people who hang out in the middle, they will keep you real, keep you grounded, and balance your over–enthusiasm by being objective without being negative.

3. You choose to leave some relationships behind

After I came out of my dark night of the soul, one of the hardest things I had to do is leave some relationships behind which no longer fit in with who I wanted to be. I had to let them go, especially certain family members, and the guilt I initially experienced was as heavy as the weight of a mattress.

And now, I can’t find the energy to engage with certain people.

There might be people in your life that hold you back, cause drama, or who won’t understand you anymore. As soon as you start to share less of yourself, the relationship begins to lack meaning. It’ll start to feel like you and the other person are on different wavelengths and don’t really connect anymore.

On the surface, it might look like a loss of friendship or relationship. But it’s actually a sign that you’re growing.

Once you move, you can’t help but move. Some people just won’t choose to grow with you, and your job is to keep moving, even if it means leaving that person behind. It’s tough and it’s sad, but there really is no other way, because if you stay, you’ll become responsible for holding yourself back.

It might seem like a loss, but you’ll find other friendships and relationships who are a better fit. And if they don’t show up, that’s okay too because the most important relationship you’ll have is with yourself. I am not one to need a lot of friends, but the ones that I do have are the ones who grow with me and help me grow. There will be people who are more on the “fun and games” basis with you, and others who are on the “learning life lessons” and “soul contract” basis with you. Not everyone will want to be a part of your entrepreneurial journey and that’s a good thing! If they want, they can start their own business.

Are there any other disguised signposts that you’ve experienced? I’d love to hear them in the comment section!

Wow! I don’t usually comment but I couldn’t leave without saying Thank You for writing this! I have encountered and lived through all three of these. It feels like I have cycled through this a couple of times, actually. It’s tough when I wish we could all just hold hands and sing songs in perfect harmony all day long (Lol) instead of becoming stumbling blocks and negative noise for each other! But I suppose no one would be pushed to grow in my perfect world, though. It takes a lot of courage to let your light shine. I, for one, am so thankful you did with this piece of writing. You lifted me up today! You are the best 🙂
