Why you dismiss your soul gifts

Spiritual one, have you ever been envious of someone for what she’s got and what you don’t have?

I’m talking about people having the career talent and gifts that you wish you had — for example, maybe your cousin is a hotshot power broker who jet sets and flourishes in the limelight, or maybe your neighbor is an award–winning Broadway musical star, or maybe that girl you went to high school with is now a top model.

Career gifts pack tons of power and punch in the Earth world, makes people stand out, and sometimes are the ticket to someone’s fame and fortune.

But when it comes to people with not–so–obvious gifts — spiritual gifts — it makes it really hard to exist in the face of other people’s glory.

If I ask you, heart–conscious and spiritually awakened one, what your greatest gift is, it very well could be, “Being able to sense other people’s feelings” or “Be a witness to someone’s journey.”

At first blush, compare that against someone’s leggy model legs, or someone’s 5–octave vocal range. Being able to sense other people’s feelings doesn’t sound like much of a gift at all. In fact, it sounds like useless bullshit!

As an empath and a witness, I’ve been told that those are my gifts. And I thought, big deal. How does that help me?

Such was my first reaction, because I held up these spiritual gifts against the glitz, glamour and sexual appeal of other people’s career gifts — the talents that we as a culture place super–colossal value on. You know, money, power, fame, visibility, materials and appearances.

Spiritual gifts, when viewed side by side with career gifts, seem totally weak, lame and have as much voltage as a Christmas tree light bulb. That’s why it’s difficult for lots of people to honor and market their gifts, because on the surface, they really do not seem like much. And because they don’t seem like much, it can feel rather embarrassing and we fear being misjudged or underestimated.

In Gay Hendricks’ book The Big Leap, he tells a story about working with his client, who uncovered that her genius was in facilitating meetings, because she had an intuitive sense of when the energy in the room shifted. My ego thought, “Of all the things someone can be a genius in, it’s that?” I couldn’t believe it. Imagine telling that to someone at a party. It seems totally weird.

Either spiritual gifts are useless, or maybe, we’ve been looking at them through the wrong lens.

Career talent does have the potential to change the world, but they also have the capacity to destroy it and also render a lot of what we value to become meaningless.

Spiritual gifts, on the other hand, exist to heal the Earth and serve its people. It has its purpose.

What it comes down to is: Career gifts serve you. Spiritual gifts serve others.

The next time you feel the urge to dismiss your soul gifts, or compare them against people who have the talent, glitz, fame and glamour, remember this distinction. Don’t compare apples to oranges.

Spiritual gifts may appear small, but they are dynamite and pack massive power that can heal the world. Heal and love one person, and that sends a ripple effect throughout our universe that you can’t even begin to fathom. Your soul gifts are your legacy, and that’s how you gotta see and use them.

What does this have to do with sales? Well, everything! Taking ownership of your gifts, and even seeing them as something valuable is step one in being able to sell and market yourself. If you don’t believe in and use your soul gifts, no one will.

What do you consider to be your soul gifts? Do you feel less than because your gifts don’t seem as ‘sexy’ or as powerful as someone else’s career talents? How can you start celebrating your soul gifts in your business? I’d love to hear from you in the comments below!

This post was really great! I never created a distinction between career and soul gifts (maybe because I surround myself with people who make a career from their soul or intuitive gifts??). But, I definitely resonated with this; not feeling special, empowered or important because I couldn’t sing, dance or draw exquisitely. I wasn’t born with this great genius or talent for… anything really.

I don’t know what my soul gifts are. I really love cats (and animals in general), and writing, and travel. I don’t know what I can bring to the world but it probably wouldn’t be as impressive as being a world class athlete, opera singer or scholar – that’s for sure. :3

    Great post!
